Even though the Amazon region concentrate small population (2 habitants/kmē), as compared to the population of other six Brazilian biomes, the deforestation caused by the traditional agriculture practices, coupled with the advance of mechanized agricultural frontier, the agribusiness, and extensive livestock farming, both closely linked to the illegal exploitation of timber, put the northern region of Brazil at the center of global environmental issues and discussions. According to Government of Brazil official numbers, 75% of GHG emissions from Brazil are caused by deforestation, which are mostly concentrated in the Amazon region. This activity ranks Brazil among the four largest carbon emitters in the world.

New environmental practices should consider the importance of environmental services for the survival of mankind, including an integrated vision of the environment and humans, taking care of water resources, the reproductive capacity of the soil and preserving biodiversity in a more structured and long-term.
